Kindness Animal Hospital is equipped with a modern surgical suite, and our veterinarians are able to perform a variety of general surgical procedures. Before surgery, our veterinarians will discuss why we believe a particular procedure is necessary, what the surgery entails, and expected recovery times. We carefully examine every pet prior to surgery, and the anesthetic protocol is created according to the procedure and your pet’s particular needs and health risks.
Surgeries performed at our hospital include:
- Ovariohysterectomy (spay)
- Growth removal or tumor biopsy
- Laceration repair
- Urinary bladder surgery and stone removal (cystotomy)
- Abdominal exploratory surgery
- Oral surgery (tooth extractions)
- Cesarean section
- Emergency surgery (e.g. foreign object retrieval, wound repair, others as needed)
- Certain orthopedic procedures (coordinated with a mobile surgical specialist)
Please note that some orthopedic and other advanced surgical procedures are referred to a surgical specialist.
All pets are required to have simple blood tests performed prior to surgery to screen for any unknown problems or health risks. On the day of the scheduled procedure, most pets are given medication to reduce the stress and anxiety of the visit.
During anesthesia, an experienced, trained technician monitors your pet’s blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm, respiratory functions, and body temperature, and maintains proper oxygen levels for your pet. All patients undergoing general anesthesia have an IV catheter placed to allow for the admission of fluids and medication.
Pain control is essential for the comfort and healing of your pet post-operatively. We will employ several different types of pain control (called “multi-modal analgesia”), based on the procedure performed, the anticipated level of discomfort, and your pet’s individual response. Dissolvable sutures are used whenever possible, and written instructions are provided upon discharge.
