Senior Dog Care

It is crucial that your senior dog receives regular care to prevent and treat the diseases to which older pets are more prone, such as bone and joint problems; hormone disorders; cancer; and diseases of the kidney, heart, and liver. Dogs age at a much faster rate than humans, so bi-annual visits are strongly recommended to make sure that your senior dog is as healthy as possible.

During your dog’s senior wellness visit, we will discuss any age-related changes your dog may be experiencing and any concerns you have about his or her health. We can help guide you in caring for your senior dog by providing advice on nutrition, exercise, mobility, and changes in your pet’s lifestyle.

Our bi-annual wellness exam for senior dogs includes:

  • A thorough physical examination
  • A detailed dental evaluation
  • Tailored vaccinations (based on risk factors)
  • Comprehensive diagnostic testing
  • Parasite testing and prevention
  • Heartworm testing and prevention
  • Nutrition and diet counseling
  • Behavioral evaluation and counseling

Since dogs age more rapidly than people, dramatic changes in health can occur in as little as three to six months. The following warnings signs could indicate a problem that should be addressed as soon as possible:

  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain
  • Significant decrease or increase in appetite
  • Failure to eat for more than two days
  • Increasing thirst or water intake
  • Excessive urination
  • Vomiting and/or abnormal stool
  • Bad breath or drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Decrease in vision
  • Excessive panting or rapid breathing
  • Hair loss, especially if accompanied by scratching in a localized area
  • Stiffness or trouble moving
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures or convulsing
