Rabbits and Pocket Pet Care

Rabbits and pocket pets need veterinary care too!

Kindness Animal Hospital has the expertise to medically treat rabbits and pocket pets, such as ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rats, mice, gerbils, and hamsters. Just like dogs and cats, your pocket pet requires regular veterinary care to maintain good health.

If you have recently acquired a rabbit or pocket pet, we recommend that you bring your new pet to see us within 1 to 2 weeks after purchase. This visit allows us to check your pet’s current health condition and discuss tips for proper home care. Be sure to feed your new pet the same food as you were given at the time of purchase; we can discuss your pet's future nutritional needs during your first visit.

During the exam, your pet will receive:

  • A comprehensive physical exam, including a dental evaluation for rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, and guinea pigs
  • Thorough diet history and evaluation
  • Diagnostic tests as needed

The Importance of Annual Exams for Your Pocket Pet

Signs of illness in rabbits and pocket pets can be difficult to recognize, so it is important to bring your pet in annually for a complete physical exam to ensure that he or she is healthy – early prevention is vital to prolonging your pet’s life.

Please call us right away if your pet is exhibiting signs of illness or injury. It may be an emergency situation if your pet has any of the following symptoms:

  • Changes in behavior
  • Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea or persistent abnormal droppings
  • Absence of fecal material
  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Abnormal breathing
